suffering

i started reading the book of job today. i think job chapter 1 is quickly becoming one of my favorite scriptures. all of us at some point or another experience suffering and loss (some more than others) and can identify with job. probably few of us have experienced suffering and loss in one single day on the scale that job did... but nonetheless we know what it's like to have a bad day.

what i love about job chapter 1 though is his response to it all. he doesn't ignore the suffering but tears his robe and shaves his head which is the custom of mourning in job's time. he is obviously deeply effected by the tragedy that has just occurred. but it doesn't end there. the scripture says that he tore his robe and shaved his head, then he fell to the ground and worshiped! what an amazing response to the worst day of his life... he fell to the ground in worship.

listen to job's words:

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
may the name of the Lord be praised.”

in this world, we will all experience suffering and loss. but i pray that in those moments we would have the faith of job to acknowledge our pain, but also in it and through it, to fall to the ground and worship.
